Attacking Civil Liberties One Act at a Time

Pssst! Guess what? President Obama may likely sign a bill into law that would allow the government to take you in the middle of the night and lock you up indefinitely for being a so-called “terrorist” without the burden of proving why to an independent judge, despite your sixth amendment’s guarantee of a right to trial.

This is what is at stake with the Senate’s passing of the National Defense Authorization Act. It places “domestic terror investigations and interrogations into the hands of the military, which would open the door for trial-free, indefinite detention of anyone, including American citizens, so long as the government calls them terrorists.”

So much for guilty until proven innocent. Nearly every elected official in Congress voted for the National Defense Authorization Act. But how many of you have heard  about this egregious attack on our civil liberties?

Ah yes, it’s only a matter of time before military posts are situated within city limits and our American soil becomes “a battlefield.”

What’s more is that the government will not be obliged to reveal what they deem a ‘terrorist’ association is.

Are you a terrorist if you’re a member of the Occupy Movement?

Ironically, we” look back and see that the government used the Occupy Movement to precipitate this act. Because “whether we’re talking about food libel laws, … indefinite detention in the War on Terror or … the pepper-spraying of peaceful protesters-  the law is increasingly tilted against the individual and against freedom,” as Forbes Contributor E.D Kain recently remarked.

NDAA is a serious violation of First Amendment human and civil rights, including freedom of speech and freedom of the press. And as International Business Law Magazine states, should the bill become a law, it will likely hinder both the Occupy Wall Street and the Tea Party campaign, as well as “muzzle news outlets and independent whistleblowers from exposing government corruption.”

So be prepared for the militarization of the police from Oakland to NYC.

If this is something you feel strongly about, do something in your community to raise awareness. Discuss this with your friends, your family and your neighbors. Together, we will be heard.

Karma is looking down right now and smiling because the United States has been shedding blood and bullying other countries for long enough.
